What’s in a Name?

Since I’ve never been a fan of surprises, most of you know our daughter’s name by now – Noelle Olivia Chin, but perhaps you’re not sure how we came about choosing that name.

We wanted a first name that was meaningful and significant, and the moment I heard the name Noelle I knew it was the name.  It is the feminine version of the word Noel, which means “The Day that Christ was Born” or “Christmas”.  Since Noelle will be born shortly after Christmas we thought it was fitting.  Also, like Christ is a gift to the world – the one who came to save and redeem – Noelle is our sweet gift and blessing.  To us, Noelle means “a gift” – the most perfect, precious, beautiful gift in the world.

I am also a fan of nicknames, so one important element I thought about while choosing names was what her nickname would be.  With my dearest friends I fondly shorten their names into lots of funny, endearing variations.  For Noelle, I’d like to call her Ellie… or even Noellie or Noey.  When she gets older, I foresee Elle as being a nice name to grow into.

Her middle name will be Olivia, which has no significant meaning because the name Olivia actually means “leader of the elf army” or “olive” and we didn’t really like that.  As much as I love the name Olivia (so gorgeous and sophisticated) and think it would be a lovely first name in and of itself, we wanted something a bit more meaningful for our daughter’s first name so we used it for her middle name instead.  We’ll also be having our parents choose her Taiwanese and Korean middle names, but it won’t be on the birth certificate.

I also stumbled across a fun site that compiles names altogether.  I can’t find the site I got this from, but here’s the full description of the name “Noelle Olivia Chin”:
